The process in which I apply pigment to the surface is my point of departure. Hematite Ink, Graphite and Venetian Plaster dictates my tonal palette. In multiple layered surfaces, the mineral ink when mixed with water follows the brushstroke and deposits pigment at the edges of the line, akin to the sediment a flowing river deposits along the banks. I introduce imagery into my abstractions, taken from residues of my visual recollections and imprints of small objects or scenescapes. The painting invokes vague memories, aged images – like old photographs, worn, partly-faded, and treasured.
